The Moes see off higher-level Nuneaton in a competitive pre-season outing

Report by Kieran King:

A Charlie Young wonder-strike helped Loughborough Dynamo to a 2-0 victory over Nuneaton Borough in a pre-season friendly at the ADT Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Young scored the game’s opening goal with an excellent long-range effort, before Tristan Matthews added a second to seal a comfortable win at Watermead Lane.

Lee Attenborough made two changes to the side that fell to defeat on Tuesday as Max Peverell and Charlie Young replaced Tom Oliver and Luke Foster in the Dynamo starting XI.

The Moes started the match the brighter of the two teams and created a couple of early opportunities. Danny Gordon saw a shot blocked, before a Rob Norris delivery caused havoc inside the box but Evan Garnett was unable to get an effort away.

After a positive opening from Dynamo, Nuneaton grew into the contest and went close from one of their trialists, when a 25-yard attempt crashed off the woodwork and dropped over the crossbar.

Attenborough had to make an early substitution when Josh Riley replaced Karl Demidh and the former almost made an instant impact from the bench as he got on the end of Garnett’s through ball, but he was denied by the Boro’ goalkeeper.

Garnett almost scored himself just four minutes before the break after he ran onto a long ball, before hitting a powerful strike which was saved by the visitors shot-stopper, and it ende goalless at half-time.

Following a cagey start to the second period where chances were few and far between, it took a moment of brilliance for Dynamo to open the scoring, and it came through an unlikely source.

Young, who’s last goal for the Club came almost two years ago, found half a yard of space before curling a sublime effort into the top right corner.

Moments later, The Moes doubled their advantage through an excellent team goal as Gordon’s low cross was met by Matthews in the centre who prodded the ball into the back of the net.

Dynamo almost grabbed a third on a couple of occasions after Dean Freeman’s cross-cum-shot was tipped onto the bar, before Garnett saw a snapshot fly inches wide of target.

As the half wore on, Nuneaton pushed in an attempt to pull a goal back, but Attenborough’s side held on to grab a clean sheet and a deserved pre-season success on home soil.
